It's time to decide: do you give up a bit of bed space against the cab, or do you sacrifice some rail-to-rail bed width?
When it comes down to a crossover vs. side rail toolbox, there isn't a single right answer. You'll need to carefully consider what you gain and what you lose with each option to make the right choice.
The Crossover Toolbox: A Classic Configuration
Also known as a saddle box or crossbed box, the crossover toolbox spans the width of your truck bed and rests on the side rails directly behind the cab. It’s a popular style for both vocational and commuter trucks.
The Advantages
- Suspended Storage: Because the box rests on the bed rails, there is clearance beneath it. You can still slide sheet goods like plywood or drywall, or long 2x4s, all the way to the front bulkhead of the bed.
- Symmetrical Access: With dual lids or a single wide lid, you can grab what you need from either side of the truck.
- Massive Capacity: Spanning the entire width of the bed offers a ton of continuous storage space - perfect for longer gear or tools.
The Drawbacks
- Loss of Bed Depth: Even though you can slide flat materials underneath, you lose a significant chunk of vertical bed space at the back of the cab. You won't be able to push a tall pallet or an ATV flush against the bulkhead.
- The Center Reach: If you have a lifted truck or large tires, reaching items dead center in a crossover box may require climbing onto the tire or into the bed.
The Side Rail Toolbox: Increased Accessibility
Side rail boxes (or innerside boxes) mount flush along the top of your bed rails, running parallel to the side of the truck. They are incredibly popular for tradesmen or anyone needing rapid access to tools and gear without climbing into the bed.
The Good
- Keeps the Bulkhead Clear: The biggest advantage of a side rail box is that it leaves the front of your truck bed open. If you regularly haul large pallets, bulk material, or heavy equipment that needs to sit flush against the cab, this keeps your deck clear.
- Ground-Level Accessibility: You can reach everything inside without needing a boost. No climbing into the bed, no stretching over the side.
- Highly Modular: You can run a single box on the driver's side, mount one on both sides, or even pair them with a crossover box to create a massive wrap-around storage system.
The Bad
- Reduces Bed Width: Hanging boxes on the inside of your bed rails eats into the overall width of your bed. If you frequently load wide materials that sit above the wheel wells, side rail boxes can get in the way.
- Width Limitations: Side rail boxes are a bit narrower and typically not as deep as a crossover. Opting for two can make up for the limited space.
The Bottom Line: You Decide
Neither box is an absolute winner. If you carry a lot of long tools and need to slide sheet goods underneath, a crossover box is a good pick. If your daily payload demands pushing large, bulky items all the way to the cab and you want ground-level tool access, side rail boxes are best for you.
